The country has recently been taken by storm with the high impact revival of the Ukulele as a preferred instrument for children and youths of all ages.

Ukulele fever appears to be highly infectious and is spreading almost uncontrollably from school to school. Teachers are reporting exciting responses from enthusiastic children. Several schools now have adopted the Ukulele for whole class teaching under The Wider Opportunities Initiative.

These instruments are inexpensive and allow children to sing and play concurrently, thus using more coordination in their music making.

Ukuleles originated in Hawaii but were introduced by the Portuguese. The word means “jumping flea” it is like a small guitar with just four strings.

Tim Lewis at Holway Park School in Somerset has a wealth of experience both playing and teaching with these wonderful little gems and has written some exceptional guides containing tips, ideas for teachers and pupils.
